摘要
Macrolides, or macrolactone glycoside antibiotics, act as antibiotics by binding to ribosomes and consequently blocking protein synthesis. The high affinity to bacterial ribosomes, together with the highly conserved structure of ribosomes across virtually all of the bacterial families, give macrolides broad-spectrum activity. This paper describes macrolides by focusing on their classes, clinical uses, modes of action, resistance, and biosynthesis. It also introduces new macrolides and ketolides.
