Genetic studies have identified residues in the structured regions of the histories that are critically involved in the formation of heterochromatin. Any investigation of the events that regulate access to the chromatin substrate must take into account the dynamic nature of the nucleosome, and the regulated inter-conversion between various levels of chromatin higher-order structure.
