Aeroallergens and pollinosis: Molecular and immunological characteristics of cloned pollen allergens

Affecting almost twenty percent of the population in industrialized countries, allergic diseases such as asthma and seasonal rhinitis result from the development of immediate hypersensitivity to otherwise innocuous components of the environment. Pollen, the male gametophyte of flowering plant species, is one of the most predominant sources of environmental allergens, and a significant cause of allergic diseases. This review discusses the nature of pollen proteins as allergens, their effect on the human immune system and their mode of environmental transmission, including effects of the interaction between pollen aeroallergens and air pollution. The influence of cross-reactive pollen allergens to the incidence of food sensitivities is also discussed. Flowering plant species that possess allergenic pollen, identified with allergens cloned from these species, are also discussed.
