摘要
We review results and trends regarding the structural relaxations due to atoms and molecules adsorbed on close-packed surfaces of fcc and hcp metals. One observes primarily a buckling of the two topmost metal layers. Sometimes lateral relaxations are seen in the top layers, mostly radially away from or towards the adsorption site, and occasionally rotationally around the adsorption site. Such relaxations exhibit the local nature of the adsorbate-substrate bond and thus support a cluster-like view of surface bonding. These relaxations may play an important role in catalysis and other surface processes.
