PHYSIOLOGICAL SALINE FOR THE LARVAE OF SPODOPTERA-LITTORALIS (LEPIDOPTERA, NOCTUIDAE) BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF THE HEMOLYMPH

Principal ions, pH, and osmolarity were measured in hemolymph from sixth-instar larvae of the noctuid moth Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval). Results were used to develop for this economically important insect a physiologically isotonic saline, containing 7.1 mM CaCl2, 22.0 mM Na2 .beta.-glycerophosphate, 13.5 mM MgSO4, 26.9 mM MgCl2, 29.5 mM KCl, and 23.9 mM glucose. The pH was adjusted to 6.8 by titration with KH2PO4.
