Nanocrystal processing (NXP) is introduced as a rational approach, based on solid-state thermodynamics and surface chemistry, toward the preparation of perfect and stable nanometer-scale single crystals. Selected facts from the descent of fullerenes are first recalled. The terminology and motivation of nanocrystals and NXP are defined and outlined. The elements of NXP are then delineated in generic terms, with reference to known surface chemistry. Illustrations of etching and passivation processes from the chemistry of ionic nanocrystals and aerosols are given. Prospects for the implementation of NXP are then discussed.
