RHODIUM-CATALYZED REACTION OF BENZOIC ANHYDRIDE WITH STYRENE UNDER MOLECULAR-HYDROGEN

摘要
It has been found that styrene undergoes intermolecular hydrobenzoylation by benzoic anhydride under a normal pressure of molecular hydrogen in the presence of a tertiary amine and a catalytic amount of [RhCl(cod)](2) and a phosphorous ligand to give a mixture of 1,2- and 1,3-diphenyl-1-propanones. The catalyst efficiency has been observed to be a marked function of the ligand employed; triphenylphosphite appears to be one of the favorable ones. The reaction using deuterium has also been carried out to obtain insight into the reaction mechanism.
