ROOM-TEMPERATURE COMPOUND FORMATION IN AG-CD AND AG-ZN THIN-FILM COUPLES AND THEIR TRANSFORMATION BY AGING

Process of room temperature compound formation in Ag-Cd and Ag-Zn thin film couples. kinetics of compound formation and their transformation by aging have been described. In both Ag-Me thin film couples the AgMe3 compound is formed first. The calculated interdiffusion coefficients for cadmium and zinc are 1.4 x 10(-16) cm2 s-1 and 1.1 x 10(-16) cm-2 s-1 respectively. During aging for 0.5 years the compounds are partly or completely transformed into Ag5Cd8 and AgCd(C), and AgZn(C), AgZn(H) and Ag5Zn8, respectively. After 10-12 years a new unidentified phase has been formed in the Ag-Cd couple, but in the Ag-Zn couple the compounds have been decomposed to polycrystalline silver and non-crystalline zinc.
