摘要
Investigations on the dependence of the mechanical properties of a coating system, especially of the adhesion strength, on impurity gas reactions require improved experimental techniques. An ultrahigh vacuum apparatus for film deposition by reactive magnetron sputtering is described and first results for the determination of the adhesion strength of TiN coatings on high speed steel substrates measured by a fracture mechanical testing method are presented. These data are compared with microhardness measurements and results of the scratch test on samples produced in the same deposition run. The problems of sample preparation, characterization of the chemical composition of specimens and determination of the mechanical properties of a coating system are analysed and discussed.
