SPECTRAL INVESTIGATION OF EXCITED SPUTTERED ALUMINUM PARTICLES AND THE INFLUENCE OF OXYGEN DURING ION IRRADIATION

The characteristic photon emission during 40 keV argon ion bombardment of solid aluminium and aluminium oxide samples has been studied. By varying the partial pressure of oxygen between 5 × 10-11-5 × 10-6 torr in the target chamber, the influence of formed oxide layers on the photon yield was investigated. A model involving radiationless deexcitation processes, taking place close to a metal surface, has been suggested in order to explain the observed light intensity increase effects for the A1 I lines, when a pure aluminium surface is oxidized. For the A1 II and A1 III lines a more complex feature was observed, which does not have its origin in radiationless decay mechanisms. It is proposed that excited sputtered aluminium oxide molecules are predissociated at some distance from the target surface, which would account for the observed effects in connection with the light emission from excited ions. © 1979 IOP Publishing Ltd.
