The asymmetric hydrogenation of beta-keto esters using 0.02-0.05 mol % Ru(II)-BINAP-derived catalyst can be conducted in a stardard Parr shaker apparatus at 40-degrees-C and 30 psi of hydrogen in the presence of 0.1 mol % of a strong acid.
