An efficient and versatile synthesis of substituted and annelated pyrido[2,3-b]indoles (alpha-carboline) involving conjugate displacement on alpha-oxoketene dithioacetals by 1-methyl-2-oxoindole enolate anion and subsequent cyclization of the adducts in the presence of ammonium acetate has been described.
