IRON-OXIDE THIN-FILMS PRODUCED BY LASER ABLATION DEPOSITION

Iron oxide films of good optical quality have been prepared by laser ablation deposition using a KrF excimer laser. By varying the oxygen partial pressure from 10(-7) to 10(-1) mbar the composition can be varied from Fe3O4 to alpha-Fe2O3. X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy studies reveal that the films are nanocrystalline. Magnetisation measurements reveal a decreasing magnetic moment as the film composition varies from Fe3O4 to alpha-Fe3O4. Fe3O4 films deposited on (0001) sapphire substrates at T > 650-degrees-C, are oriented with their [111] direction perpendicular to the film plane. Subsequent annealing in air oxidises the Fe3O4 films to gamma-Fe2O3. Square in-plane hysteresis loops with a coercivity of 45 mT are obtained from investigations of the transverse magneto-optic Kerr effect.
