Cases of Serratia infection and detection of Serratia in clinical specimen have recently been increa-sing. To investigate the actual status, the Serratia research group was organized. The present report deals with the sensitivities to 9 different antibiotics of 341 strains isolated from various clinical specimens during the period between June 1977 and January 1978, and other 512 strains isolated earlier (from 1970 through 1976). A marked tendency was observed that the proportion of the resistant strains to any antibiotic was higher among the 1977~1978 isolates than among the earlier isolates. When compared by specimen, the proportion of resistant strains was higher in urine. Many of these resistant strains were pigment nonproducers. To gentamicin, nalidixic acid, and miloxacin, more strains of old isolates showed high sensitivities. Of old isolates, 5% was resistant to gentamicin, whereas of the 1977~1978 isolates, 40% was resistant, showing the most marked tendency of acquisition of resistance. © 1979, Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry.
