MAGNETIC-FIELD DEPENDENCE OF OPTICAL-ABSORPTION IN SI NANOCRYSTALLITES - A QUANTUM-SIZE EFFECT

摘要
The Zeeman splittings of the quantum confined states are observed in nanocrystalline Si films by the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurement. The MCD signals with the largest intensity are due to the states at 2.8 - 3.1 eV. The shifts of the observed peak positions in the MCD signals to higher energy with reduction in the size of nanocrystallites suggest that the shifts are due to the quantum size effect. The states at 2.8 - 3.1 eV are due to direct transitions in Si nanocrystallites, which is consistent with the luminescence of nanocrystalline Si.
