Cycloaddition of imines derived from polycyclic aromatic amines with acid chloride (or equivalent) in the presence of triethylamine at -78 degrees C to room temperature unexpectedly produced trans-beta-lactams. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
