Nitrogen implantation by plasma source ion implantation was conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The wear performance was characterized using a pin-on-disk wear tester and an alpha-step profilometer. Nitrogen concentration depth profiles of implanted samples were studied using a scanning Auger microprobe. It is found that the lowest wear rate in the implanted zone corresponds to the nitrogen concentration peak. By varying the target temperature, the nitrogen concentration profile was engineered to achieve a better wear behavior. The pin-on-disk wear data agree with the expected result.
