EFFECTIVENESS OF DELAYED PUNISHMENT IN AN APPLIED SETTING

The relative effectiveness of immediate and delayed reprimands contingent on off-task behavior in a classroom was examined. This was the first attempt to demonstrate the timing-of-punishment effect in an applied setting. Subjects were 4 hyperactive first and second graders. Their off-task behavior was reprimanded by the teacher either at onset or approximately two minutes following onset. Rates of noninteractive first interactive off-task behavior were recorded. Immediate reprimands resulted in much lower rates of interactive off-task behavior than did delayed reprimands. Non-interactive off-task rates were unaffected by reprimand timing. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed. © 1990 Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy. All rights reserved.
