FATTY-ACID COMPOSITION OF START-FEEDING SALMON (SALMO-SALAR) LARVAE

The fatty acid composition was determined by a chemometric method in seven different diets, two commercial, three based on capelin roe and two based on herring roe, in salmon (Salmo salar) larvae just prior to acquiring external food and in the larvae after they had been fed for one month with the seven diets. The fatty acid composition, as determined by multivariate statistical analysis, differed among the seven diets and between the diets and the non-fed fry. The fatty acid composition of the fry changed with feeding, but not in accordance with the fatty acid composition of the diets. The changes were qualitatively similar for all diets, but the fry fed the three capelin diets changed less than those fed the two herring diets and the two commercial diets.
