Optical and electrical attributes of vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) prepared using selective lateral oxidation to produce a buried oxide layer which created a current aperture within an all semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror were reported. It was demonstrated that the buried oxide layer had deep implications that led to novel optical phenomena in the cavity as well as significant developments in VCSEL performance.
